Yearly Archives2015

Content comes with a price image

As 2016 quickly approaches, so does the 25th anniversary of the Internet. In 1991, most people didn’t even know what the internet was. No one could imagine how it would change all of our lives. With the light-speed development of technology today, consumers can’t wait for the newest version of their favorite mobile device. People wait in line for a new release to replace their mobile device that’s only a year old and gladly pay for it. We want newer, cooler, faster, better than my neighbor’s and more powerful devices and we want them now. We also have an insatiable appetite for content. From digital articles to video, we can’t get enough of it.           ...

An advertising blog about a dog image

My granddog Newton went missing recently. Like all families whose furry family member goes missing we were frantic. What to do? Advertise of course! Few problems can’t be solved with proper advertising. First we began with old fashioned, grass roots door-to-door stomping to get the word out to our closest target audience. A neighbor reported that Newton came up to say hello but she shooed him away because of her own dog. No other sightings were reported. Next, we went old school and plastered fliers everywhere broadening our geographic reach. Neighbors streets away said they saw Newton but he was moving fast. So still no concrete results yet. We moved on to digital media via Facebook apps like “For ...

BUYER BEWARE of the Political Advertiser! standard

Unless you have been living under a rock, you are well aware that 2016 will be a very busy political year. As a media department, we’re used to planning ahead, and this election year has been on our radar (almost) since the last inaugural address. The 2015-2016 election cycle is predicted to generate a record amount of spending at the national, state and local levels. We can expect more advertising for more extended periods of time than in previous elections. This could potentially make it difficult for other advertisers as rates are likely to increase as less quality time and space are available. The pace of political advertising will pick up tremendously in 1st quarter, not just with the candidates ...

My Takeaway from TEDx image

After years of reading about, listening to and watching various TED Talks, I attended my first one at last week’s TEDx Detroit. So, what’s the deliverable from plunking down $100 for a big bottle of Absopure and a Walsh swag bag? Inspiration. Sure, lots of people poke holes in TED Talks for some pretty good reasons but the truth is you actually do learn about cool ideas and new insights on how to actually help anyone you’re speaking with fully understand what you do. For those of us presenting and packaging our businesses for consideration, delivery of visual learning and better storytelling is always a hallmark of TEDx events. Speakers eschew text-heavy PowerPoint slides full of crowded charts and ...

Interns – a few words before departure image

At SMZ, we don’t like to brag, but this is one cool place to work. This is why our summer interns decided to pass along a few words before they headed back to college to enjoy what’s left of their youth. Seriously, think about it, our endless supply of M&Ms is enough to put us in the conversation. Here’s what they had to say: — Grant Boufford (Art Director Intern) As my time as an intern at SMZ comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on my first day here. The day consisted of a round of introductions to a whole set of new faces, a thick binder with instructions on how to complete various tasks, and a celebratory lunch ...

SMZers outside of SMZ … Living the creative life image

Every now and then, we like to tell you something about one of us … Not only does Lisa Sabo, VP/creative director, spend her days creating smart work for clients. She spends her time away from SMZ creating intriguing work for herself and audiences at ArtPrize, among others. So we asked her a few questions … This is your second year participating in ArtPrize. What did you submit last year? I called it Quilt of Frugality. It was a series of acrylic paintings. I started with the idea of using the paint left on my palette at the end of a painting session (frugality). Like the idea of making something unexpected out of nothing or leftovers (like a quilt). The ...

Analytics: Tips for posting image

There’s nothing worse than writing funny, engaging social media content that falls short of its mark when you post it. Seriously, think about it. At some point, we’ve all had that “OK. This is funny. There’s no way this cannot go viral” moment, only to end up with zero likes, comments, retweets, favorites and shares. And although this can torpedo our confidence, nine times of out of 10, it’s not because we’re writing dull, dreadful content, but because we’re an hour too early or late from when our audience spends their time online. High engagement rates aren’t about 140-characters of funny content, they’re about hashtags, strategy and, most importantly — analytics. Don’t be afraid To be honest, numbers scare me. ...
