Listen and learn about your own brand. standard

There’s a difference between listening and actually hearing what someone really thinks about you. Truth is, the people who are most important to us are sometimes those whose opinions we blithely dismiss. Personally, not a great approach. Professionally? Equally as disastrous. Do you know how those who matter most to your success perceive your company? It may be very different than the brand essence or corporate personality you believe you’ve built or earned. Are the messages your company is sending via all those audience touch points you employ motivating … inspiring … engaging? If they’re not, maybe it’s time to ask and really listen to those you seek to influence.  Every organization needs to conduct a self-exploration exercise occasionally, to ...

Selfie Branding, Advice for My Peers standard

Take one look at Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Vine and it’s clear that we are living in the age of the “selfie.” Because we’ve gotten to the point where taking a picture of yourself is so common, it needs its own term. Yes, the selfie has many variations from the classical bathroom mirror shot to the duck face and peace sign. But in a time when social media is everywhere and anyone can easily access every detail of your life via the internet, companies aren’t the only ones who need to think about branding. Remember when you went to an interview and the only thing your prospective employer knew about you beforehand was the sound of your voice? Well, those ...

Top 12 interviewing do’s standard

Everyone has an interview horror story. Some of us have them from both sides of the table, as both interviewer and interviewee. Interviewing tips were part of the recent AdCon, an Adcraft event for college and university students considering the field of advertising. That’s in addition to breakout sessions highlighting the various positions, resume critiques and portfolio tips. But this list of do’s that was shared with the students really caught my attention. Do: Be on time. Dress professionally (keep cologne/perfume use to a minimum). Turn off your cell phone! Show up prepared. Bring several copies of your resume. Know specifically what type of job you want to get into. Speak respectfully of previous employers/managers. Be open to answering questions ...

Experiential Branding – A Visit to American Girl Place standard

Some 40,000 people were in the Windy City to run the Chicago Marathon recently, but they had nothing on the four of us who “sprinted” up Michigan Avenue to American Girl Place instead! Upon entering, it’s quickly apparent why American Girl is not called a “store,” but rather, a “place,” an “experience,” because it is that, and so much more.  American Girl helped me to experience so many things on so many levels. As a mom, I was reduced to tears – of joy mostly (the price tags caused a few tears of sorrow).  The look on my daughter’s face, on my friend’s daughter’s face, on the faces of the other kids in the store were all looks of pure ...

Marketing: it’s all about Common Ground standard

Let’s face it: marketing is a pretty simple proposition.  First, you have stuff (products, services, ideas) that you want others to buy. Next, you engage a marketing firm to act as a catalyst in helping facilitate that exchange of money for goods.  Simple enough, right?  “Not so fast,” as ESPN’s resident Game Day college football analyst Lee Corso is fond of saying. Buyers and shoppers normally have loads of choices, so our role is to help clients differentiate themselves. However, of equal importance is an honest effort to create common ground  between what clients are selling and what consumers are buying.  In our very best moments, folks on our side of the desk mine that middle ground to establish a ...
