The SMZ Q&A: Sam Dailey

A picture indeed says a thousand words. Art Director Sam Dailey brings brands to life every day with his fresh ideas and smart designs.

What was your first job? And what did you learn from it?

My first real job was building maintenance/janitor at Michigan State while I was in school. I had a boss who was very supportive, and I learned a lot from her. There were a lot of not fun aspects to that job, but she always treated me with respect. She really taught me how to be responsible.

How do you stay inspired?

Music and reading books. Non-visual media!

What’s a brand you can’t live without and why?

I love the Fender brand of musical instruments. There’s so much history and it’s distinctly American. I’m always excited when they release new products.

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve received?

Just be yourself and be confident.

What word or phrase do you most overuse?

“Hi. See attached.”

What new skill or capability have you developed recently?

I’ve been slowly learning how to model things in 3D software.

What’s your go-to karaoke song?

“Life Is a Highway”

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

Super smart

Who’s your favorite noisemaker?

John Lennon. He was infinitely creative and used his platform to campaign for peace. Objectively the best Beatle.

Today, the world needs more _____ and why.

Compassion. I think the world would be a much better place if we could all think outside of ourselves and show more compassion for those less fortunate. Also laughter.
