Organizing your organization

The Container Store opened its first Michigan location in Novi on June 4, 2016. Across the street from 12 Oaks Mall, The Container Store stocks every basket, bin and bookend imaginable — it’s an organized person’s paradise. I decided to visit during opening weekend to see what the store is all about.

The store itself is organized into areas dedicated to different organizational needs. There are sections dedicated to organizing closets, offices, bathrooms, laundry rooms and more. The closet section was staged to look as though I were looking at my own closet (in a world where it has any sort of an organizational system.) The store was buzzing with activity. Cashiers could be heard cheering as purchases were made and workers were making presentations about the different types of luggage they sell to help you stay organized on the go.  As all that was happening, I made my way through the store to the office section.

Now, I have to admit, I’m very happy with my own organization system featuring baby kitten folders. However, the office section had many different tools to keep any desk organized. With rows of binders, label makers and hanging file folders, The Container Store has an unbelievable array of organizational tools to help keep any workspace tidy.

Staying organized at work is undeniably important. Disorganization in the workplace can cause frustration and lead to a loss of productivity. Having an organized workspace is a win-win for everyone.

While it is important to have a clutter-free desk, we can’t forget that it’s just as important to keep projects organized and deadlines in mind. So while we’re developing systems to keep our own personal work spaces shiny and clean we shouldn’t forget to take a step back and make sure our entire office has an organizational system that works. We should also see what we personally can do to help the office be and stay organized.

Whether you’re a binder person or a kitten-folder person like me, a labeler or a to-do list keeper, managing a desk or managing an office, make sure you look into different ways to stay organized and find what works for you.

And for those to-do list keepers, you might want to put “Visit the Container Store” on your list.
